If your MDF project will be anywhere near high humidity or water, it should be primed and sealed on all edges to make sure it does not swell or distort, as even a small amount of water seeping under an MDF unit can cause sections to swell noticeably if they have not been sealed.

Yes. While MDF is versatile and easy to work with, it doesn’t like moisture. If any gets into the wood it can swell and warp. To make sure that this doesn’t happen you will need to use a specialist primer to seal it.

New member of the devil’s advocate club. Direct emulsion of MDF can be used if you wish. Sand down when dry with fine stuff – 180 grit-ish – and then apply the second coat if the first coat ‘furls’ up too much. This happens only on the edges of the MDF.
